TCM for Weight Loss

Restore Balance. Revitalize Metabolism.

Struggling with weight that won’t budge despite your best efforts? At PULSE TCM, we believe that sustainable weight management starts from within. Instead of calorie counting, we identify your unique body constitution to address the internal imbalances—like slow metabolism and “dampness”—that lead to stubborn weight gain.

A Holistic Journey: From Treatment to Lifestyle.

TCM focuses on the “Root” (the internal cause) rather than just the “Branch” (the symptoms). By optimizing your organ functions, we help you achieve a healthier weight naturally.

What Causes Excess Weight? A TCM Perspective

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) views a healthy circulation of Qi (vital life energy) and blood, and smooth functioning of organ systems as essential to health and vitality.

TCM sees weight gain as due to imbalances in the bodily energy and organ systems. Stress, lack of physical activity, or a poor diet are common contributing factors that disrupt this flow. The following are some common bodily imbalances, or body constitutions, that are most commonly associated with excess weight:

Body Constitutions Prone to Weight Gain

DAMPNESS

Excessive moisture or fluid accumulation in the body.

Case Study

Revitalizing Metabolism & Overcoming Stubborn Weight

Client Profile
"I realised my body wasn't 'broken,' it was just out of balance. Once my Spleen health was restored through acupuncture and herbs, the weight started moving naturally."
Client O, Female, 20s
The Challenge

Client O regularly exercised but struggled to lose weight despite trying various caloric-deficit diets and cutting back on carbohydrates. Frustrated by the lack of results, she sought a more holistic approach through integrated PULSE Nutritionist + TCM weight loss programme.

After a consultation with the TCM physician, she was found to have spleen deficiency, and blood/qi deficiency. She also revealed during her consultations that she commonly experiences bloating after meals, and in the morning after she wakes up.

The TCM Assessment

After a consultation with our TCM physician, Client O was found to have Spleen Deficiency and Blood/Qi Deficiency. These imbalances manifested as chronic bloating—specifically after meals and upon waking up in the morning—indicating that her digestive system was unable to effectively process nutrients and fluids.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see just a TCM Physician or just a Nutritionist?

Sure! You can choose to work with either professional as well. Simply select the clinician you would like to see on the appointment booking form.

We do find that patients usually experience more effective results when engaging both dietitian and TCM thus we would still recommend seeing both if possible.

Can I see a TCM Physician specifically for weight loss?

Yes. Our weight loss program is led by registered TCM Physicians who address the internal root causes of weight gain, such as dampness or metabolic imbalances.

How many TCM sessions will I need?

The number of sessions varies depending on your individual body constitution and goals. A typical course involves a weekly session over 8–12 weeks for sustainable results.

How do I prepare for my session with a nutritionist?
  • It’s important to think of goals. What would you like to work on with the nutritionist? Is there anything that you would like to change or improve?
  • Bring a list of medications/supplements with you, and be able to talk about your medical or weight history.
  • In some cases, it may be helpful to do a 3-day food diary before the session. This is a list of everything you are eating and drinking for the last 3 days, so that the nutritionist is able to get an idea of your food habits and eating patterns.
  • Write out any questions that you would like to ask during your session.
  • If you feel it would be helpful, you may ask a family member or friend to come with you to your session.
How frequent will the visits be?

For optimal results, we generally recommend once-weekly visits to ensure consistent stimulation of acupuncture points and metabolic regulation.

Is acupuncture safe? Does it hurt?

At PULSE, Acupuncture is performed by a trained and qualified practitioner using sterile needles, it is generally considered to be safe and low risk.

Most patients do not experience pain or side effects from acupuncture. Acupuncture needles are hair-thin from 0.12-0.30mm, while a normal medical needle for injections ranges around 0.9-1.3mm.

However, occasionally some might experience transient discomfort like nausea, dizziness or bruising, pain and slight bleeding from the needle insertion.

Additionally, patients with alcohol allergies are advised to notify the attending physician prior treatment.

Which area of the body will the TCM treatment be done?

Treatments are customized. Depending on your assessment, needles or cupping may be applied to the abdomen, limbs, or back to target specific meridian points.

How do I prepare for my TCM session?

Wear loose, comfortable clothing. Ensure you have had a light meal an hour before and are well-hydrated.

How do you keep track of my progress?

Our physicians track progress through regular tongue and pulse diagnosis, as well as monitoring improvements in digestion, energy levels, and physical measurements.
